2 nd October 2011

"Dear Pat,
We would like to thank you for the most wonderful wedding service you gave us at Belfast Castle. We really couldn't have asked for more and it was exactly what we wanted and more. Everyone commented on how special the service was. I do have to say you impressed my grandfather (who is not easily impressed). We wish you all the best and hope to see you again in the future".

I believe in the importance of life long stable marriage between a man and a woman. It was the kind of marriage and family I was born into and I feel I benefited greatly from having a loving mother and father who, in spite of their human failings, were faithful to each other and their children for their lifetime.

Those of us who are Christians also believe that marriage is a way of life that has the special blessing of God. Catholics believe that marriage is a "sacrament" - a sign of God's love for us, His People / Church. Ideally marriage should last for life and those who make marriage vows should literally "move heaven and earth" to preserve their marriage. If there are problems in a marriage both parties should do all in their power to resolve those difficulties. Separation and Divorce should always be the absolute last resort to marriage problems. In our modern society people often give up far too easily in saving a marriage.
SEPARATION AND DIVORCE:
Sadly there comes a time when a marriage is as "dead" as if one or both of the parties were dead. This is always a matter for sadness and regret. No one should be expected to stay in a loveless marriage or in a marriage where their is violence, unfaithfulness or constant tension and disagreement. Separation and divorce should ideally happen without acrimony and bitterness - especially in there are children involved. People may stop being spouses - but no one ever ceases to be a parent. Couples who part have a huge moral and social responsibility to be on "friendly terms" for the sake of the children.I know that emotions can be very high but declaring all out war is bad for everyone in the long term.
